Zde vyobrazená postava se japonsky nazývá Hotei. Říká se, že to byl čínský zen (chan) mnich z Mingzhou (dnešní Ningbo, provincie Zhejiang), který žil na konci dynastie Tang. Je uctíván jako Maitreya Buddha. Také v Japonsku byl Hotei zařazen do buddhistického panteonu, ale je také jedním ze sedmi bohů štěstí (shichifukujin). Jako takový je uctíván jako bůh štěstí a spokojenosti. Hotei je často zobrazován s velkým chlupatým břichem, vějířem a velkým pytlem na zádech. Písemné znaky jeho jména doslova znamenají „látkový pytel“ a odkazují na pytel pokladů, který nese.

Hotei se stal oblíbeným námětem zenových malířů, kteří ho často zobrazovali, jak ukazuje na Měsíc, jako v tomto tisku. V rámci zenové tradice dokonalý kruh symbolizuje čisté srdce osvíceného mnicha. Nejkrásnějším kruhem, který lze na tomto světě vidět, je úplněk, díky kterému se stal symbolem osvícení. Tento design je přímo inspirován zenovými malbami na téma Hotei. Yoshitoshi dokázal přizpůsobit hladké tahy štětcem zenových malířů současnému stylu tisků ukiyo-e.

The figure here depicted is called Hotei in Japanese. It is said that he was a Chinese Zen (chan) monk from Mingzhou (present-day Ningbo, Zhejiang Pro- vince) who lived at the end of the Tang Dynasty. He is worshipped as Maitreya Buddha. In Japan, too, Hotei was included in the Buddhist pantheon, but he is also one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune (shichifukujin). As such he is revered as the god of happiness and contentment. Hotei is often depicted with a big, hairy belly, a fan and a large sack on his back. The writing characters of his name literally mean "cloth sack" and refer to the sack of treasures he carries.

Hotei became a favourite subject for Zen painters, who often depicted him pointing to the moon, as in this print. Within the Zen tradition, a perfect circle symbolizes the pure heart of an enlightened monk. The most beautiful circle to be seen in this world is the full moon, which made it a symbol of enlightenment. This design is directly inspired by Zen paintings on the subject of Hotei. Yoshi- toshi has managed to adapt the smooth brushstrokes of the Zen painters to the contemporary style of ukiyo-e prints.
